New York resident with NYS Permit getting a Florida Drivers License and driving in NY?

Hello,

I'm a 17-year-old NYS resident who has a NYS learners permit.

My family owns an apartment in Florida which we travel to many times a year.

In New York, in order to get your NYS license under the age of 18, you must take a drivers education course. I never took this course. Why? I have outside of school obligations that require nearly all my free time.

During my next trip to Florida, can I take a road test in Florida and receive a drivers license from Florida? Can I then use it in New York? Do I have to be a resident of Florida? I don't attend school in Florida so I don't believe I'm a full resident. I don't know what classification I would fall under, do you?

Please don't simply quote the DMV website. I have looked at both New York's DMV website as well as Florida's DMV website and the wording is very vague.

Thanks for your help.|||To get a driver licence in Florida you have to prove residence, entitlement to be in Florida, and identity. You aren't resident, so fuggedaboutit. You are resident in New York, so you can only have a New York licence. And what't the point of telling us not to quote the CMV website? They are the people that are going to tell you I am right! So I am going to quote them anyway. Besides, there is nothing vague if you know how to look for information.

"Provide the following:

Two original or certified identification documents.

Social Security card, if you have one.

Proof that you've completed a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course.

Parental Consent Form, which must be signed in the presence of the driver license examiner or notarized. "

Id acceptable:

http://www.hsmv.state.fl.us/ddl/faqkeys.鈥?/a>|||A learners permit is ONLY valid in the state that issued it. Your New York learners permit would not be valid in Florida. Sorry.|||Legally, you are only allowed to get a license in your home state (unless you aren't a US resident). Of course, many people do travel to less strict states and get away with it, but this would technically be fraud and you could get into trouble for it.

Each state has different rules for residency. But in general, if you are living in a state for AT LEAST half the year on average, then you could make a good argument that you are a resident. Anything less than that and you are on shaky grounds. If you neither go to school in Florida nor live there half the year, then I wouldn't recommend trying it.|||Free Thinker told you some of the (horrifying) truths about Florida licensees. He forgot about driving with the left turn signal continuously on. The problem you will have (since you are under 18) is that you need to have a Learners permit for at least one year to get a permanent licence. You also need paperwork certifying 50 hours of driving experience with at least 10 hours of night driving. Then comes the bigger problem. You go back to NY and are driving a vehicle with NY plates and a Florida drivers license. Thats where the hassle starts. Might just as well get the license in NY. I lived in Ocala for 11 years and had kids get their licenses there.|||Ok, 1st things 1st. You should find out if Florida will allow you to hand-in your NYS Permit for a Florida one. If they do, great, then take your road test in Florida, pass and get a Florida Driver's License.

When you come back to NY, go to DMV, turn in your Florida Driver's License and get a NYS Driver's License. It's called reciprocity, you will not have to take another road test or written test. I think the only "State" that makes you do either of the above, is the District of Columbia (and that's because of all the traffic circles).

With a Florida Driver's License, you are permitted to drive in NY, however, if you're stopped (infraction, checkpoint, etc) and the car you're driving has NY plates and you have a Florida license, some questions might be asked. A driver's license from any other State will permit you drive in NY, you are expected to follow NYS rules and if you don't and get "suspended" or "revoked", it will be your "privilege" of operating a motor vehicle in NYS that suffers. Although I must tell you that both NY %26amp; Florida are part of the Driver's Compact, the 2 DMV's share information, %26amp; it just so happens that if NY suspends/revokes your driving privilege - they will notify Florida %26amp; Florida will suspend your Florida license for failure to obey Out-Of-State rules.

You're expected to turn in your Out-of-State license to NYS DMV if you are going to reside in NY. You could be charged with 509.1 of the VTL for being "unlicensed" in NY %26amp; being a NY resident ($50 fine + $50 surcharge).

However, if Florida will not allow you to turn in your permit for 1 of their's, then, either a) take the road test here in NY after you turn 18 or b)when you go down to FLorida, apply for their permit and then take their road test - get a FLorida license - then come back to NY and turn it in under the reciprocity rules I explained above.|||As a native NYer and now a resident of Florida I will tell you that all you need is a pulse to get a permit or take a driving test here. I live in Ocala, north central Florida. If you take your test here it is likely that NY will accept it but then again it may be challenged. NY tends to be quite a bit more strict. If you were coming from NY and had your license already then all you would need to do is go to the DMV and get your license changed over for a small fee. Believe me they let the legally blind drive down here! As far as residency is concerned you do own a place down here and probably can use the address so I don't think that is an issue. Do yourself a favor and call the local DMV here in Ocala it is (352) 732-1260 and ask questions.

A hint for you from a long time, born and raised NYer

When the man or woman answers the phone say "yes ma'am (or) sir" my name is... and throughout the conversation answer with yes ma'am/sir or no ma'am/sir it will get you a lot further than the NY demanding attitude which they detest down here. It is called respect!

Best Wishes

And could you bring me some really good NY canoli's!

Thank you Sir : )

Go Ahead and Make My Day!!!

Add on: Florida cops realize that we have a lot of snowbirds here 6mths here 6mths up north. They don't expect the snowbirds to change their licenses but in NY that is not necessarily the way they operate. You could easily get a ticket in NY with a Florida license. I think they give you 30 days to change your license.

Just out of curiosity, how close is your 18th birthday? I don't really want an answer to that question but it may just be easier for you to wait. I know it seems like a million years away but it was only yesterday that I was 18 now I'm pushing 50. And just for the record, Women have short hair too! Like this woman does! : )

Can I get a drivers license in florida with a suspended license in new mexico?

Will the DMV in Florida check that and allow me to drive here? I have no desire to return to New Mexico for any reason at all....|||No

The DMV will deny.

Maybe not,,,depends on what the offense was.

http://www.flhsmv.gov/offices/

Call one of them and ask.|||They will run a nationwide check and find the suspended license and block your DL in FL.

j|||No you cannot. All 50 states now have a computer system that checks for suspension in all of the USA.

I am suspended is Washington and moved to Colorado. My dad is a state trooper in Colorado and he told me they would check if I tried, but I tried anyway. And when they put my SS# in the computer it came up right away that I was suspended. And I married so my name had even changed!!!

It is not illegal to try it, You could say you didn't know, but it won't work. Sorry!!!

When i take my drivers permit test online(Florida) do i still have to go to the DMV to take a picture?

You don't need a picture for the permit. It's basically a piece of paper. At least that's how it is in Texas :]

Whats the differance between taking the D.A.T.A course online and at the DMV for your Florida drivers permit?

i know that at the DMV you have to listen for 4 hours.|||You must take the Florida test whether you take any other test on line or otherwise.

Ok, i got crushed for asking this somewhere else....in florida does the dmv check on if you have insurance?

Like when you register your car, do you have to show proof of insurance, if yes, after you register, can you cancel it or will DMV take away your license? Can they check on you?

Thanks!|||Yes, they can check! You HAVE to have insurance.|||If you're planning on driving without insurance, you clearly are someone who should not be driving! And frankly, you sound like you'd be or have been a menace on the road.|||yes|||When you register your car you have to have proof of insurance and you title if you are registering for the first time or transferring from another state.|||Yes, you have to show proof of insurance to get your tag. Once you get your tag and want to cancel your insurance, yes you can do that too, but make sure you tell the insurance company you want to cancel your insurance because your car is not running(broke or whatever) that is a key point because if you let your insurance run out, you know just not paying the bill the state is going to yank your liences very quickly. Then you have to pay the reinstatement fees, yadda, yadda....P.S you know that they can run your tags to see if insurance is on your vehicle. that's if you get stop by the police...so you can have that insurance card but if theirs no coverage..be prepared to pay some moola. This just came into effect within the last 2 years or so. So be wise whatever decision you make...coming from someone who didn't like to pay their insurance but now i make my payments every month. PLEASE BELIEVE ME on that one.|||It's been a couple of years since I lived there, but at the time they did not check. You had to sign a form that said you were guaranteeing you had it. Sounds too easy? It is.

Once you've signed the form, if you get pulled over or are asked for proof elsewhere and you don't have it, you're busted for providing false information to the state. Now the government can come after you.

And from the Insurance Industry side of things (I work for a major company), messing around with it, cancelling it, going for a while without it . . . whatever . . . can really negatively affect you the more you do it.

Most importantly, say you ignore everything, don't have it, drive, and seriously hurt/kill someone in an accident. You can be looking at jail time and debts you have to repay that will haunt you the rest of your life.

Get insurance. It's part of having a car. If you can't afford it, don't drive.

Dmv florida permit test ?!?

Can I go to the dmv without my mom but with my older sister that's 21i took the test online I just need to get the vision test and the picture at the dmv so do I need any papers for her to sign for her not to go?|||need parent or legal guardian/you are not old enough to sign|||You must provide :

Proof that you completed a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course (check your local yellow pages under 'Driving Instruction' for a location near you) or a license from any state, country, or jurisdiction, and

Parental Consent Form, which must be signed in the presence of a driver license examiner or notarized if parent or guardian will not be present (form is located at http://www.flhsmv.gov/html/forms.html). If you are under 18 and are not married one parent or legal guardian must sign your license application. Step-parents may not sign unless they have legally adopted you.

General questions for anyone to answer:

*When backing up, do I look with my mirrors, or by placing my hand on the passenger's head rest and look behind me? I've heard to do both... Which one? :S

*Do you actually go out in traffic?

*What happens if I fail?

Notes:

I'm familiar with most traffic situations, and I have 17. I'm pretty decent on parking, but I'm not sure on a 3-point turn/parallel parking. Will they make me do a 3-point or parallel park? If so, any tips?

However, you have to be living there permanently. It can't just be a temporary living arrangement. Unless you can show you're planning to get married, it's probably not going to work.

Will the DMV in California know I got a license in Florida?

I was in LA for almost 3 years but went back home to Florida. Naturally I had a California drivers license but got a Florida license since I thought I was staying permanently. Well, I'm back in LA and I need a California drivers license but I'm not sure what I should put on my application. Should I put that I want an original, renewal, duplicate, or should I just say I lost my license? Would the DMV in Florida let the DMV in California know I have a license from them? I really want my old drivers license number back.|||its a simple transfer just like you did in fl/go to dmv and get the form and fill it out/routine|||First, You will be asked about any licenses that you may currently have or have previously held. If he were to get in a serious accident, before he gets the title transferred, he could walk away , and leave you stuck, because you would still be the owner on record..

Once he transfers the title, it no longer would matter...

So the important question revolves around the bill of sale....not the plate...|||You can go IN the DMV and report your tag lost or stolen.

As the other poster said, the bill of sale is more important.

Applicants for a first time original Florida driver license must provide two forms of identification, proof of date of birth, proof of residential address, and proof of social security number. Non US Citizens must present proof of legal presence.

All applicants must show proof that they have completed a traffic law and substance abuse education course and will be required to pass vision and hearing tests, road rules and road sign tests, plus a driving test.

Applicants for a learner鈥檚 license must be at least 15 years old and must present a parental consent form. Go to the complete list of learner鈥檚 license information, rules and restrictions.

The same identification requirements for citizens and proof of legal presence for non-citizens are required to get an identification card. See how to apply, and age and fee requirements.

HELLLLPPPPP DMV FLORIDA TEST?

I need to know what it is like when i get me permit. i already took my DATA (drug and Alcohol) test. and i want to know what will happen at the DMV center

there's a vision and hearing test right? but is there a written test? there are 2 othere test one on road rules ane the other on road signs 20? s each...correct? is there anything else i need to know and study? THANKSSS!

p.s I love details... :P|||First they give you the written test, though I had to take it on a touch screen computer in the DMV where I live so you'll probably be on a computer. I think it is 20 questions on Road Rules and Road Signs. 40 Questions in total I think. If you study the Florida Drivers Book, you will pass the test easily since the questions are easy and is multiple choice. Once you are done and pass the test they'll do a vision test telling you to read the letters in one of the lines they tell you. They actually didn't do a hearing test for me in my DMV. If they do give you a hearing test, I expect it they will give you headphones and they put this beep noise and you have to tell them if you hear it or not.

You'll get your pre-learners easily. Good luck! =)|||Of course there's a written test, dumbass. What do you expect?

They also take a urine test and will check your vision, three times..

Will a Florida DMV recognize a Kansas IP and exchange it for a Florida IP?

For those who aren't familiar, the different driving age laws between Kansas and Florida are as follows:

Kansas:

14 - 'IP' Drive with parent

15 - 'Restricted' Drive with parent or alone to school/work

16 - 'Almost Full' Drive with parent or alone during daylight hours

17 - 'Full' Drive alone

Florida:

15 - 'IP' Drive with parent during daylight hours

16 - 'Partial' Drive with parent during nighttime hours, alone during daylight hours

17 - 'Almost Full' Drive alone past daylight hours

18 - 'Full' Drive alone

Now, I'm 15 and in Florida and needing my Florida IP. My Kansas IP is not expired, even though I can't use it in Florida due to different laws. I took an online Drug Course to abide by Florida's laws in preparation. Now, however, I'm wondering if I can show them my Kansas IP (which allows me to drive more in Kansas than the equivalent would in Florida) and they will give me a Florida IP without needing to take the written test since it is a downgrade? Thanks so much for your help since I already passed the Kansas written tests. :)|||Your Kansas permit was valid while you were a resident of that state. How to get temp tag in Florida?

Bought a used car from a private owner. Car loan was through Wells Fargo. Notary sent title to Wells Fargo. Florida DMV says I need the title to get a tag of any kind. A letter from Wells Fargo stating they have the title and are in the process of having it transfer will get me a temp tag. But I can't get Wells Fargo to send me one because they have no idea what I am talking about. Anybody else have this problem and how was it solved? And what could I have done differently to prevented this mess?|||Your mistake was paying for the car without getting the title (and the car) in exchange for your money.

In AL, a 10 day temp tag is $1.50-3.00 but you need proof that you bought the car. Bill of sale %26amp; letter should suffice.

However, Wells Fargo doesn't know you from Adam. They aren't going to send YOU the title without a notarized letter from their borrower.

Chances are they send the title to the seller and its up to you to get it from him.

We have posters here on a weekly basis that NEVER get their title and can never get permanent tags.

You need to STAY ON the seller to ensure you get the title.

In the meantime, you may be able to buy an additional 10 day tag several times.

Ive seen AL sell multiple ones one every 10 days.

If for any reason the seller fails to give you the title, you simply cannot buy a permanent tag or legally sell it.

However, IF his loan is paid off, he has no reason to not give you the title. (It does him no good)

Now, IF his loan was not paid in full, Wells Fargo could repo it from you.

Now you know why, if you asked, we would tell you, "no title, no deal".

If it comes down to it, you can sue and probably win but that's expensive and may take months. And even "winning" doesn't mean the seller gives you the title or the money. It means you have a piece of paper saying the seller owes you money.

If you DON'T know this stuff, then you shouldn't have a license to drive.

That's it. I mean, the ACTUAL motor vehicle code in the state of Florida is a VERY thick book. All you are asked to read is that small handbook with lots of pictures. If you didn't catch it then, it can be corrected but you will have to pay. Just show proof of the wrong date of birth, usually by showing your birth certificate, and pay the costs. It will be fixed.|||I would simply go in again but bring your social security card and birth certificate..And just be like look I got my license here and whoever did it messed up the date and I came in and was denied!!! How many questions can you get wrong on the DMV permit test in Florida?

There are two parts to the test. 20 questions on rules and 20 questions on signs. I believe you can get a 15/20 on the rules and a 15/20 on the signs and still pass. I missed three all together when I took it back in 2001. Good luck!

My birthday is in a week, but my family is travelling before that, so I was wondering if instead of having to wait until we go back to Florida, can I just get my permit while I'm in Maine? Does it matter which type of Florida DMV service I signed up for?

I signed up for an appointment at the Florida DMV a month in advance. However, after a few weeks, I noticed that I had checked "first time U.S. license" instead of "driver's license class E test". I want to take the physical drivers exam to receive my license, but now the day i signed up for is full. Does it really matter which service I signed up for?? Or should I call and try to explain it to them? The time slots for every category is equal, so I do not see why it would be much of a problem.|||I would try to contact them. If you are not able to, just go at the scheduled time.|||You better call the DMV office and explain the situation, because you have been scheduled for fist time license test not for Class E test. Does the Florida DMV sell personal information to any companies?

No, it's against the law. But a Company can get your address and other information like that from the DMV if they are trying to collect a debt and you've given the company any information. Your Drivers License information is considered public records. If someone wants to know where you live all they have to do is visit the courthouse.|||Choicepoint.|||Um, no that is a government agency and would not be legal for them to do so. Do Florida DMV clerks computer-verify the state file number on one's birth certificate...?

I, years ago, read an article that covers how a couple of D.C. investigators obtained genuine U.S. passports and authentic state licenses by using false/modified documents and the identities of a child and of a deceased man. I'm a political/criminal science double major writing about immigrants, identity theft, similar matters, and I've increasingly become curious. I now have to ask: do Florida DMV clerks even computer-verify the state file number on one's birth certificate when applying for a driving permit or state ID? Do they computer-verify one's SSN, not to just check its validity, but to match it to the applicant's name? Should they happen to have a system into where they enter such numbers for authentication?|||Prior to 911 , they simply looked at your Birth Certificate and maybe a 2nd ID and issued a license . Now, they may look a little more depending on the situation . They do not have access to SS number verification . Its not the IRS dude , and its not immigration . Its the dept of motor vehicles and it would not surprise me if some of those workers were illegals .

2. no, they'll just confirm your info

3. odd question, especially for somebody who claims not to have a reason to ask...|||Not a background check, but if you have outstanding traffic tickets, it will show up. If you have outstanding tickets, your license could already be under suspension. They do not notify you of this when it happens.

Take your proof of Florida insurance; your original out of state title and verification of the motor vehicle's *vehicle identification number (VIN), completed on form HSMV 82040 or HSMV 82042 (available on our website), to your local Florida county tax collector's office.

In the state of Florida, a motor vehicle is required by law to be registered within ten days of the owner either becoming employed, placing children in public school, or establishing residency. Registering your motor vehicle goes hand in hand with the titling process.

VIN verification is required for all USED motor vehicles not currently titled in Florida, including trailers with a weight of 2,000 pounds or more.

An individual gets a speeding ticket and is sent to 4 hours driving school. This individual has a certificate of completion (the 4 hours driving class) from a previous ticket. So he changes the info on the old certificate and makes it current. He takes it to the County Clerk, and they just "Approve" it with a stamp and give the certificate back to this individual.

So my question is, is it really that simple to fool the County Clerk and the DMV of Florida?|||You may have fooled a clerk; however, the DMV is contacted directly by the school, as they are required to report who has--or has not--attended.

Can I get a Florida State I.D if I have a license on file with DMV but don't physically have it?

I moved to Florida from NY... I lost my NY drivers license and I'm waiting for a new one in the mail. But I also need a Florida I.D... If I go to the DMV with my social security card ( don't have my birth certificate) since my picture and information is already on file with the DMV cause of my license can I get a regular state I.D?|||Ignore the previous 2 answers they are wrong. You can get a state ID anywhere all you need is a address and birth certificate and social security card. If you want to get a Florida license without taking the test over then you need to get a duplicate NY license, and despite the misinformation about DVM not being linked from state to state is false. How can I find out if I'm a registered voter in Florida? At DMV i said yes but never got confirmation card.

Contact your county Supervisor of Elections (see link to all 67 counties below) and ask them.

Do it soon! Depending on upcoming local elections (and the January 29th Primary Election), registration books in Florida close 29 days prior to election day.

If DMV failed to register you (and they often do . . . we have no control over what DMV does/doesn't do) there might still be time before the next election.

Good luck!|||The easiest way would probably be to contact your county clerk's office. If you're not registered, they can register you as well.|||The first time you go to vote, you give them your name, and if they have you on their list, and your good.I never had a "card" or anything, unless i lost it

Why wont the dmv in caliornia let you take a drivers test with a car that is from florida?

i went to take my drivers test in a california DMV and (since i don't have my car yet) i used my mom's (but mom lives in florida) so the lady at the dmv told me i could not take the test because of a at fault law or something (i was really mad so i really did no comprehend the explenation she gave me) so.. does anyone know the answer?|||It's probably due to smog laws. (California Air Resources Board) numbers on emissions control devices. your moms car from Florida is practically the same thing. its just one of those stupid laws.

Must car repairs be reported to DMV in Florida?

Checking car on Carfax and it appears clear but titles soley in Florida.|||There is no rule or law that says it MUST be reported. If it was a repair paid for and authorized by an insurance company, yes it will be reported. But if the previous owner had it fixed in some dudes garage then NO, it will not be reported.|||Repairs due to an accident should be reported in FL

Repairs due to maintenance or because something failed don't need to be reported.|||All repairs are supposed to be reported, no matter what the state.

If the carfax is clear and you are still curious, take the car to a body shop and have them look at it.

If you want to do it yourself, what you are looking for is paint colormatching, overspray, plastic filler, missing trim pieces.

Sometimes, the new paint does not match the old paint exactly, or may fade at a different rate than the old paint.

Overspray is where paint was sprayed on items that are not supposed to be painted like the underside of the car, under the fenders, exhaust and suspansion pieces. Sometimes you can find what feels like a seam in the paint where the new paint was adjacent to the masking tape covering up places they didn't want to paint. This normally occurs in the door jamb area.

Plastic filler is used to make small or cheap repairs to dents. You can easily find this type of repair on metal surfaces with a magnet or, if you are good, you can hear the difference by tapping on the surface with your fingernails.

Good Luck|||Yes, it needs to be reported to CarFax, however, in Florida, they have up to a year and a half to report it. So a CarFax could be clean today, but four months or a year from now, something could show up that you didn't know about.

Can you just take the drivers and skills test and see if you pass to get a license, or do you have to take a course first?|||You don't have to take a course first. However, it may be difficult to pass without training.

The first step is to take a written exam for your CDL permit. Once you have your permit you can schedule your test. The test will cover driving in traffic, backing, and a complete pre-trip inspection.

You will also need to arrange for renting a semi truck to take your test in. They do not provide them at the testing facility.

The Corolla might be under 2,500 pounds which puts it in the least expensive registration class.

I need help with the Florida DMV website?

I have a learner's liscence but need to make an appointment for my driving test. Unfortunately, I don't know whether to pick the class E drivers test option or the Passed Learner's Permit test and need to present documents and obtain license.|||Florida Classified Driver Licenses

The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles issues the following classes of licenses: Class A, B, C, and E. Classes A, B, and C are for drivers of commercial motor vehicles such as large trucks and buses. Class E is for drivers of non-commercial vehicles.

Since you say you have a learners permit already, that looks like you want to take your driving test, right? Unless you plan to drive a semi, you will need the Class E.

If I took my Florida DMV Road Rules and Signs Test for my Permit, do I have to take it again for my License?

Hi this is Olivia, my cousin resides at Florida. She got traffic citation while taking U turn. One year ago she has done 4-hours course. Now its required to take the course once again to dismiss her traffic ticket. Suggest DMV approved online traffic school courses. If there are any state specific (Florida) sites that would be more helpful to us.|||Hello Olvia, Good to see you back once again. Previously you have inquired about your son in doing the teen driver education course and now for your sister. Its very good.

How long does an At Fault Accident stay on a Florida DMV Record?

Unless you got a ticket for a traffic violation, it isn't on your DMV record, it's on your CLUE, where it stays forever but insurance will not count it after a time passes, usually 36 months.|||In some states it would be on your record forever. Other states will have a time frame and when that time frame is completed it will come off your record. Usually insurance companies look for that kind of thing for anywhere from 3-5 years depending on the company. Some may be shorter and some may be longer. Call your local DMV office in Florida and ask them what the time frame is for the state of Florida.|||It never actually "comes off" your record, but an insurance company can only surcharge you for it, for three full policy years.|||3 to 7 yrs.

Can I take the DMV-Florida driving test with my international license as immigrant?

As legal immigrant, can I take the road test without the company of a licensed driver? I had my valid international driving license and had a car with the insurance and registration.|||There is no such thing as a valid international driver's licence. You must have a valid licence from your country of origin, and the IDP is a multi-lingual translation of that licence, which is subject to the same conditions and expiry. If you do not have a valid driver's licence, you do not have a valid IDP no matter what date is on it. Many country licences are acceptable as exchange, but if you are from a country that does not have reciprocity, you may have to start from scratch with a permit test.

From the Florida DMV:

"New Resident Who Already Has a License:

If you're new to Florida, you're 18 or older, and already have a valid driver license from another state or country, getting your FL license can be really simple. You can use your current out-of-state license as your primary form of ID, so you'll only need a secondary form of identification. The $20 application fee will also apply.

In most cases you will be required to take the vision and hearing tests only. However, the DMV has the authority (and reserves the right) to require additional testing on a case-by-case basis."|||NO
